We are just heading into summer and in our garden we already have a lot of colour from our Azaleas, Rhododendrons and Irises. One of the loveliest colour combinations at the moment is purple and red Rhodos planted together. You can see some images in our gallery of an example of this. Something that we try to do to the Rhododendrons in our garden is to remove their spent flower heads. We have around 50 Rhodos and although it is fairly easily done I must admit we don't always get around all of ours each season. The flower clusters usually break free from the plant by snapping them off or they can be cut off with secateurs but be careful not to damage any new growth buds at the base of the flower head. Dead-heading is usually done to make the bush look more attractive, to reduce the growth fungus and to prevent a heavy set of seed. If it is not possible to remove the old flowers, it is usually not too detrimental, but flowering the next year may be reduced.
